Saint Clement I, pope and martyr, who was the third after Saint Peter the Apostle to rule the Church of Rome and wrote a famous Letter to the Corinthians to strengthen peace and harmony between them. On this day the deposition of his body at Rome is commemorated.

Saint Columbanus, abbot of Bobbio

Saint Columbanus, abbot, who, of Irish origin, becoming a pilgrim for Christ to instruct the people of France in the Gospel, founded many monasteries including that of Luxeuil, which he himself governed in strict observance of the rule; forced into exile, he crossed the Alps and founded the monastery of Bobbio in Emilia, famous for his discipline and studies, where, meritorious of the Church, he died in peace and his body was deposed on this day.

Memorial of Saints Andrew Dung-Lac, priest, and companions, martyrs. Within a single celebration, one hundred and seventeen martyrs from various regions of Vietnam are honoured, including eight bishops, many priests and a large number of lay faithful of both sexes and all conditions and ages, who all preferred to suffer exile, imprisonment, torture and extreme punishment rather than insulting the cross and denying the Christian faith.

At Seoul in Korea, Saint Petrus Yi Ho-yŏng, martyr, who, as a catechist, captured by the guards together with his sister Saint Agatha Yi So-sa, remained steadfast in his confession of faith and, having broken his bones three times, remained in prison for four years, where he died, first of the glorious line of martyrs of this nation.
