Saint Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan, cardinal

Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, bishop, who, made cardinal by his uncle Pope Pius IV and elected bishop of Milan, was in this see a true pastor attentive to the needs of the Church of his time: he called synods and instituted seminaries to provide for the formation of the clergy, visited his flock several times to encourage the growth of the Christian life and issued many decrees regarding the salvation of souls. He passed to the heavenly homeland the day before this.

On Mount Galesio near Ephesus, in present-day Türkiye, Saint Lazaros, stylite, who for many years lived in various places on a column, weighed down by the load of heavy iron and chains and contenting himself only with bread and water, and following this severe standard of living, attracted many faithful to him.

Commemoration of the holy martyrs Symphorian, Claudius, Nicostratus, Castorius and Simplicius, who, as is handed down, were stonemasons in Srijem in Pannonia, in present-day Croatia; having refused, in the name of Jesus Christ, to sculpt a statue of the god Aesculapius, they were thrown into the river by order of Emperor Diocletian and crowned by God with the grace of martyrdom. Their cult flourished at Rome since ancient times in the basilica on Celian Hill with the title of the Four Crowned.
