Saint Alphonsus Liguori, bishop of Sant’Agata de’ Goti and doctor of the Church

Memorial of Saint Alphonsus Liguori, bishop and doctor of the Church, who shone through his concern for souls, his writings, his word and his example. In order to promote Christian life among the people, he engaged in preaching and wrote books, especially on morals, a discipline in which he is considered a teacher, and, albeit among many obstacles established the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer for the evangelisation of the simple. Elected bishop of Sant’Agata de’ Goti, he was extremely committed to this ministry, which he had to leave fifteen years later due to the onset of serious illness. He then spent the rest of his life at Nocera dei Pagani in Campania, amidst great sacrifices and difficulties.

The Seven Holy Maccabee Brothers and Saint Eleazar, martyrs

Commemoration of the passion of the Seven Holy Maccabee Brothers, who, at Antioch in Syria, under the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes, for having observed the law of the Lord with invincible faith were cruelly put to death together with their mother, who suffered for each of her children, but, as it is told in the second Book of Maccabees, in all they achieved the victory of eternal life. Together we celebrate the memorial of Saint Eleazar, one of the most esteemed scribes, a man already of advanced age, who in the same persecution refused to eat forbidden meat for survival, preferring a glorious death to an ignominious life, and for this willingly preceded the others to the torture, leaving an admirable example of virtue.

Saint Eusebius, bishop of Vercelli

Saint Eusebius, first bishop of Vercelli, who consolidated the Church in the whole subalpine region, and for having confessed the faith of Nicaea, was relegated by Emperor Constantius to Scythopolis and then Cappadocia and the Thebaid. Returning to his see eight years later, he worked hard to restore the faith against the Arian heresy.

Saint Peter Julian Eymard, priest, founder of the Sacramentinos

Saint Peter Julian Eymard, priest, who, at first belonging to the diocesan clergy and then a member of the Society of Mary, was a distinguished lover of the Eucharistic mystery and established two new Congregations, one male and the other female, to promote and spread devotion towards the Blessed Sacrament. He died at the village of La Mure near Grenoble in France, where he was born.

Every day in catechesis he imparted to children and adults, in reconciliation he administered to penitents, and in the works pervaded by that ardent charity, which he drew from the Holy Eucharist as from a fount, he advanced to the point of spreading his advice everywhere and wisely brought so many to God.

Near Munich in Germany, Blessed Tadeusz Dulny, martyr, who, during the military occupation of Poland, was deported for his faith in Christ to the Dachau detention camp and, after cruel tortures, passed on to the glory of heaven.

Saints Sixtus II, pope, Agapitus, Felicissimus and companions, deacons, martyrs

Saint Sixtus II, pope, and companions, martyrs. Pope Sixtus, while celebrating the sacred mysteries by teaching his brothers the divine precepts, by order of Emperor Valerian, was immediately arrested by the soldiers who arrived and beheaded on August 6; with him four deacons suffered martyrdom, deposited together with the pontiff at Rome in the cemetery of Callixtus on Via Appia. On the same day the Saints Agapitus and Felicissimus, his deacons, also died in the cemetery of Pretestato, where they were also buried.

Saint Dominic, priest, founder of the Order of Preachers

Memorial of Saint Dominic, priest, canon of Osma, humble minister preaching in the regions devastated by the Albigensian heresy, who lived by his choice in the most miserable poverty, talking continuously with God and of God. Eager to find a new way to propagate the faith, he founded the Order of Preachers in order to restore in the Church the form of life of the Apostles, and recommended to his brothers to serve their neighbours with prayer, study and ministry of the word. His death took place at Bologna on August 6.

Three days later he overcame the flames for faith in Christ and in honour of his triumph the instruments of martyrdom also migrated to heaven. His body was placed at Rome in the Verano cemetery, then given his name.
