Saint Francis of Paola, hermit: he founded the Order of Minims in Calabria, prescribing his disciples to live on alms, without possessing anything of their own or ever touching money, and to always eat only Lenten foods; called to France by King Louis XI, he was close to him at the moment of his death; he died at Plessy near Tours, famous for his austerity of life.

At Caesarea in Palestine, Saint Aphian, martyr, who, under the emperor Maximinus, since the people were forced to publicly sacrifice to the gods, approached the governor Urban with courage, seized his right hand, forcing him to suspend the rite and for this, with his feet wrapped in a linen cloth dipped in oil and set on fire, was thrown still alive into the sea by the soldiers.

Saint Theodosia, virgin and martyr in Palestine

Saint Isidore, bishop and doctor of the Church, who succeeded his brother Leander to the see of Seville in Andalusia, Spain; he wrote many scholarly works, convened and presided over various councils and worked wisely for the good of the Catholic faith and for the observance of ecclesiastical discipline.

Saint Vincent Ferrer, priest of the Order of Preachers, Spanish by birth, who was a tireless traveller between the cities and roads of the West, a solicitor for peace and unity of the Church; to countless peoples he preached the Gospel of penance and the coming of the Lord, until at Vannes in Brittany, France, he gave the spirit to God.

At Thessalonica in Macedonia, now in Greece, Saint Irene, virgin and martyr, who for having disregarded Diocletian’s edict by keeping the sacred books hidden, was taken to a public brothel and then burned at the stake by order of the governor Dulcetius, under whom her sisters Agape and Chiona had also previously suffered martyrdom.

On the island of Eskill near Roeskilde in Denmark, Saint William, abbot, who, called to Denmark by the monastery of the Canons Regular of Paris, renewed the observance of the rule not without troubles and obstacles and left his life at dawn on Sunday Easter.

Near Milan, passion of Saint Pietro da Verona, priest of the Order of Preachers and martyr, who, born to parents who were followers of Manichaeism, embraced the Catholic faith as a child and as an adolescent received the habit from Saint Dominic himself; with every means he committed himself to eradicating heresies, until he was killed by his enemies along the road to Como, proclaiming the symbol of faith until his last breath.
