In the prison camp of Sachsenhausen in Germany, Blessed Stanisław Kubista, priest of the Society of the Divine Word and martyr, who, during the military occupation of Poland in wartime by a regime hostile to God, exhaled his breath in this prison spirit amidst atrocious tortures. Together with him we commemorate Blessed Władysław Goral, auxiliary bishop of Lublin, who in the same place and during the same persecution courageously defended human dignity and faith, dying in prison of illness on an unknown day.

At Jerusalem, commemoration of Saint Simeon, bishop and martyr, who, according to tradition, was the son of Cleopas and relative of the Saviour according to the flesh and, ordained bishop in Jerusalem after James, brother of the Lord, suffered during the persecution of the emperor Trajan many tortures and at an old age obtained the glorious crown with the martyrdom of the crucifixion.

At Reims, France, Blessed Nicolas Roland, priest, who, committed to the Christian education of children, opened schools for poor girls, then excluded from any form of education, and founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus.

At the city of Ninh-Bình in Tonkin, now Vietnam, Saint Laurensô Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, priest and martyr, who, arrested while visiting a dying man at night, for refusing to trample on the cross, was scourged and finally beheaded under the emperor You Duke.

Saint Peter Chanel, Marist priest, martyr on Futuna Island

Saint Peter Chanel, priest of the Society of Mary and martyr, who in his ministry worked in the care of the country people and in the education of children; later sent together with some companions to proclaim the Gospel in western Oceania, he landed on the island of Futuna, where the Christian community was still completely absent. Although hampered by many difficulties, maintaining an attitude of singular meekness he managed to convert some to the faith, including the son of the king, who furiously ordered his killing, making him the first martyr in Oceania.

Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, priest, who travelled in the lands of western France proclaiming the mystery of Eternal Wisdom; he founded congregations, preached and wrote on the cross of Christ and on true devotion to the Virgin Mary and led many back to a life of penance; at the village of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre in France, he finally put an end to his earthly pilgrimage.
