Memorial of Saint Anthony the Great, abbot, who, having been orphaned, making the Gospel precepts his own, distributed all his goods to the poor and retired to the Thebaid desert in Egypt, where he embarked on an ascetic life; he also worked to fortify the Church, supporting the confessors of the faith during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, and supported Saint Athanasius in the fight against the Arians. So many were his disciples that he was called the father of monks.
