Saint Gregory VII, pope, who, bearing the name of Hildebrand, at first led the monastic life and with his diplomatic activity greatly helped the pontiffs of his time in the reform of the Church; upon ascension to the chair of Peter, he claimed with great authority and fortitude the freedom of the Church from secular power and strenuously defended the sanctity of the priesthood; for all this, forced to leave Rome, he died in exile at Salerno.
